Traditional photographers take a picture,
or so it was spoken. Nowadays digital photographers capture an image.
The words convey the same sense, becoming more emphatic, intense in capture.
I have stood in the weather long enough to come to know such language is no accident. Capture -- I take the image and keep it. Whatever was out there, is mine now -- I keep it now forever, let it become a part of me. The landscape speaks nothing, but reflects both itself and me in the seeing. And after. Yesterday’s image fades in the mind behind today’s new capture. Soon it will be lost to view unless it is fixed in a print to hold what it sees. Even in the printing, color correction, editing, profiling, drying, the image and its meaning changes -- often in ways inconceivable in the moment of capture. And so, lost -- yet evolving in seeing, the changes change the keeper. |
